Grete Stern

Born May 9, 1904 in Germany, Grete Stern began her career in graphic design and advertising before becoming a photographer. While studying photography, she met Ellen Auerbach, who became her lifelong friend and co-founder of Ringl + Pits Studio. In 1934, under pressure from the Nazi regime, Stern emigrated to London and eventually settled in Argentina, where she raised her two children, Silvia and Andres.

Between 1948-1951, Stern produced around 140 photomontages to accompany a newspaper column on dream interpretation. The series is called, “Psychoanalysis Will Help You.”  These photos are a great example of Stern’s artistic approach, which combined photography and graphic design and often addressed the inner lives of women. The second week of kindergarten, I got a phone call from the school. “Your daughter fell off the monkey bars on the playground, and her arm doesn’t look right.” This was coming from a school admin, as the nurse wasn’t there. She couldn’t say for sure, but we both knew it was broken. I drove to the school and walked into the nurse’s office, where my daughter was sitting perfectly still and perfectly quiet. She was wearing a blue sleeveless dress, holding her bent forearm, bewildered by what had happened. Then, she looked up at me and cried. I held her and tried to comfort her, but I could feel myself fading fast. As the medics looked her over, they doubted the seriousness of her injury because she wasn’t crying. “She’s in shock,” I wimpered, mentally flicking them off, but physically slumping over onto the cot alongside my daughter.

Born May 26, 1877, Isadora lived as she danced, a free spirit unbound by tradition in both her personal and professional worlds. She breathed life into the rigid practice of traditional ballet, inspiring artists and poets alike, and most notably creating the modern dance movement. Her children, Deirdre and Patrick, both drowned, and she later lost an unnamed baby boy who died within hours of birth. Isadora’s dancing reputation was tainted by financial troubles, romance scandals, and cumulated in her unusual death. While riding in an open-topped car in France, her flowing scarf became entangled in the spokes of the wheel and rear axel, throwing her from the car and nearly beheading her.

“My motto – sans limites.”
