do wut yur post to do

27 Feb

There’s a growing trend in my household. Those of you with more than one child will be familiar. Some call it sibling rivalry, but I like to call it “Who’s the Bossiest?”

It usually comes out about five minutes into a peaceful play session when one of the kids wants to do something his/her way, and the other disagrees. And then, you know, all hell breaks loose into a screaming match, tears, and then one or both kids running to me with one of the following phrases… (more…)

screw bingo: miss watkins would rather tour

23 Feb

Ever imagine what you’ll be doing at 70? I always pictured myself in a snazzy track suit doing backbends in yoga class. My grandma is big into bingo, but my attention span is not so good for games. I have an uncle who plays pedal steel guitar and sings in nursing homes in Virginia. That’s right, he plays the old folks home circuit. Not a bad idea. His shows have got to be better than the visits from elementary school kids. But, now that I’ve discovered Beverly “Guitar” Watkins, I think I may do something else in my 70s, like tour the U.S. Of course, I would probably be one of those old rocker ladies rather than a blues guitarist, but either way, I’m wearing leather pants. Beverly does. (more…)

LIFE with mother

22 Feb

I love everyday family photos, so I was really happy to come across this online gallery from Life magazine. The images of mothers with their children are from the Life Classics series and are included in the book LIFE with Mother.

I almost did a post on another Life gallery called Famous Literary Drunks and Addicts, but the mothers with their kids thing is a little more uplifting for a Monday morning.

see, i can be crafty too

see, i can be crafty too

I am not the craftiest of mamas. I have some very crafty friends who have Etsy shops and handmade window treatments in their faux-finished living rooms, and I SO admire their skills. I’m just very lazy in the crafts department. But this morning when I looked at the growing by the second hole in my favorite pair of jeans, I decided to do something about it. I busted out the old sewing box my mom gave me years ago and fished around for a solution. And what did I find? A Led Zeppelin patch I got from the record store I worked in 15 YEARS AGO. Here’s what went through my head at this discovery…

Holy crap, I’m one of those old people with band patches from decades ago!

Would I look totally ridiculous if I sewed this patch on my jeans?

I don’t freaking care if I do look ridiculous. I have to act fast or my favorite jeans will be no more.

And then I looked at that nasty hole in my jeans and said, “I’m about to get crafty on your ass.”

And so I did. It’s not perfect, and if you look at the sewing from inside the jeans, it’s a hot mess. But, I’m proud of myself for being somewhat domestic. I even took a picture of myself with the end result. Notice the urban graffiti background to enhance the rock-n-roll jeans experience. This was taken near the infamous Krog Street tunnel in Atlanta.
