get the funk outta here
5 Mar
Every now and again, the darkside of life takes me over, and I don’t feel like doing anything. Don’t want to write, hate my clothes, can’t think of anything good to eat. I call it the funk, and it ain’t pretty.
It started a few days ago when I made the mistake of going to Target sans makeup and going down the AISLE of MIRRORS. Wow. Bad idea. The lighting in Target is meant to inspire you to buy everything from trash bags to hand bags. It is harsh and unforgiving even on your best hair and makeup day.
The second clue that the darkside had descended upon me was when I watched the new show Parenthood and cried at least five times. Real tears. Not just the hint of tears that wells up during a sappy commercial. I mean full on crying. Let’s just imagine for a second me with no makeup on and balling my eyes out in the mirror aisle of Target. That’s the kind of mood I’ve been in for the last couple of days.
Because this is not my first time dealing with moodiness, I have figured out a number of ways to combat the funk.
Practice yoga (or as my son says, “yoda”)
Whine to friends and loved ones
Dance in my living room
Watch TV (Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock, Always Sunny in Philadelphia)
Read my friend Misty’s blog Soapbox.Superstar
Write in a journal
Go outside for fresh air
Play guitar
And now I have a new tool to add to the list: Playing the drums.
Why did I not think of this before? Well, I have actually, but always in a half-ass whimsical way, like, “You know what’d be fun? Riding a bike for two!” The thing is, I have a drum set in my laundry room, just begging to be played. So, after throwing the dirty clothes in the washer, I decided to play. We have washcloths on the snare drum and bass drum and some weird looking sticks that aren’t as loud, so the neighbors won’t hate me as I clumsily to try to bang out simple drum beats. I’ve been playing for all of three days now, and it is definitely getting the funk outta here.

You and me both, sista! I need to get my hands on a drum set. And some washcloths. Yoga/Yoda sounds awesome, although I’ve always been too chicken to try.
By the way, listening to depressing country music is really cathartic. You should try it.
Haha – add to your list of shows: Old Arrested Development episodes on Hulu (never get old), Modern Family (OMG SO FUNNY) and a new show on Spike called Players!!!
Cat, yoga/yoda is awesome! Just try a beginner’s video at home. Or go for a class. 98% of the people are incredibly awkward in there. And you may surprise yourself:)
Misty, I love Arrested Development, too. Job rules! Thanks for reminding me about Modern Family. That show is definitely one of the best on right now. I’m thinking you and me get together and write a sit-com about parenting. Will have to be on cable, though:)
So funny I just read this- a moment ago I was watching an egg boil in my kitchen and reflecting on my super shitty mood. As soon as Annie wakes up from her nap, I think we’ll take a walk. and I think I’ll message my friend back who invited me to try yoga out with her at the space above studio. i need some yoda in my life.
wished bobby kept his drum kit here ’cause I’d be all about it, too. have fun!
I know! I’ve been married to a drummer for 10 years, but his drum kit was always at a practice space somewhere. Better late than never:)
