I recently wrote about volunteering at the Day of Beauty event in Atlanta where over 300 special-needs kids and their teachers received free spa and salon services. Well, they covered the event on Positively Georgia yesterday, and guess who makes a special appearance? Me! My first experience as a bystander in a news story!

Bystander is the perfect word as I am literally standing in this footage. That’s right, while all the other volunteers are busy doing hair and makeup and do-gooding, I’m the one in the white dress leaning against the wall looking kind of bitchy and drinking coffee.

But, please don’t let my aloof stance fool you, I had a wonderful time at this event and I  will definitely join them again next year for the 8th Day of Beauty in Atlanta.

Congrats to the Day of Beauty founder Gloria Owczarski and all of the stylists, nail technicians, makeup artists, and massage therapists who made this day so memorable for hundreds of deserving kids.

As the category says, Music is My Mood Ring, and lately my mood is a little on the soulful side. Maybe it has something to do with learning how to play drums because all of these songs sound fun to play on drums. Sleigh Bells’ new CD Treats is streaming for another couple of days on the NPR music website First Listen. A lot of people are talking about this band on playgrounds across the United States. Ok, that’s a lie. A lot of music sites and fan boys and girls have been talking about this Brooklyn band for months in eager anticipation of a full-length. I have to say it’s worthy of the hype. I’ve been dancing around the house to Treats, and I think you’ll want to as well. (more…)

I ignored the news for a few days, so I missed the announcement of Lena Horne’s death. What an amazing woman. She sings the kind of songs I love to sing around the house. The kind that inspire my children to ask me to stop singing. (more…)
