lena horne 1917-2010

13 May

I ignored the news for a few days, so I missed the announcement of Lena Horne’s death. What an amazing woman. She sings the kind of songs I love to sing around the house. The kind that inspire my children to ask me to stop singing.

Devon once said to me, “Too bad I don’t have three hands, so I can cover your hands from snapping and your mouth from singing.”

And that’s when I knew I had turned into my mother. Turning everything into a song and dance. Oh, well, Devon, it will be you singing in your kitchen one day. Sorry, it’s in your blood.

I bet Lena Horne’s kids didn’t ask her to stop singing. She had two children, author Gail Lumet Buckley, who wrote The Hornes: An American Family(Amazon) and Edwin Jones, who died in 1970 of kidney disease.

Here’s a PBS recap of Horne’s long and productive life.
