day of beauty

A Day of Beauty is a volunteer event that offers free hair, nail, makeup and massage services for special needs children and their teachers from Atlanta public schools. This is year seven for this amazing event, organized annually by Gloria Owczarski. I attended this year’s Day of Beauty to lend a hand and take some photos. I knew this would be a fun experience, but it was even better than I expected. (more…)

oh happy day

I decided to take full advantage of mother’s day this year. I told my family, “I don’t need gifts, but please make me a card. I don’t need to eat out, but I do not want to cook or clean anything. And, at some point, I’m going to the bookstore ALONE.”

Of course I did clean a bit, thanks to our cat wiping her poopy ass on the bathroom floor. And I made breakfast and tossed out a few snacks, but I did get my way for most of the day. (more…)

like hearts, bones were made to be broken

The Children’s ER was one of the first landmarks we became most familiar with when we moved to Atlanta almost a year ago. On our third visit in as many months, I was convinced my photo would be thumbtacked to some corkboard with the message: Either this woman is a terrible mother, or her family has terrible luck. It was the latter. I’m a pretty awesome mom, at least 70% of the time. (more…)

I come from a big ol’ family of southern women. My mother has six sisters, all incredibly smart, funny, and generous. These women, along with my mom and grandma, taught me the usual stuff like right from wrong and good manners, but they also taught me how to tell a joke, dance, and not take stuff so seriously, even life and death situations, like cancer.
