Artlantis 2010

9 Jun

Last weekend, the family and I hit the Artlantis festival in Atlanta. This is the second year for Artlantis, a showcase of local artists and musicians put together by The Beep Beep Gallery.

Atlanta is such a festival-friendly city, which is great if you’re looking for ways to entertain yourself and your kids for FREE. And, since I’ve only lived here a year, festivals are a really good way for me to get to know Atlanta’s art and music scene.

The Artlantis Festival took place on June 5 outside Druid Hills Baptist Church. Tents lined the lawn and bands played on the steps of the church overlooking Ponce de Leon Ave. The artists were happy to let me take some pictures of their work and many offered my kids candy, always a smart marketing move for the parent demographic.

We watched a few bands play, including Lindsay Appel, a singer and musician I immediately recognized as one of my neighborhood’s babysitters.

After the cotton candy high wore off, we had to call it a day. I would have stayed longer to check out some more bands, but with no bounce house or facepainting, my kids started to look like this…

Yes, Holden is wearing two different flip-flops. It’s called self-expression…

One of the bands I missed out on is Thy Mighty Contract. Here’s a great video for the song Conjugal Freelance.
