Johanna Fateman of Le Tigre

19 Aug

Johanna Fateman is a major creator. She lends her voice and synth talents to Le Tigre and produces the band Men. Don’t let the freedom loving, zany dance antics of Le Tigre fool you into thinking Johanna is all play and no game; this mama is one smart cookie who has successfully carved out a career as an artist, business owner, writer, musician and mother.

Her homebase is NYC where she is co-owner of the salon Seagull, a business she likens to the collaborative creative process of a band. The so-called “zine-queen” is also a contributing writer to Art Forum. She’s a major supporter of the arts, and has been spotted hitting the gallaries with her daughter, Goldie.

To some, Johanna’s life may seem spread a little thin, but to me she epitomizes a successful creative life. Her business and home life are based in NYC, but she occasionally travels the world for Le Tigre, who while on hiatus, keep their presence alive online and through the now-screening documentary Le Tigre: On Tour.

Le Tigre is a electronic pop-punk band that inspired my friends and I to dance like drunken deceptacons on video last year, and now continue to inspire others to make fools of themselves with the Le Tigre karaoke cover contest.

Watch Le Tigre put the fun in feminist!
