Look good while mothering with Jaimes and Lynn

29 Sep

This is my very good friend Lynn Rivera. We met in Virginia Beach while working at the same hair salon called Wink. Lynn is from Atlanta and she recently moved back. I am beyond excited that she and her family are here, mostly because we get to hang out all the time. But also because she’s my hair stylist. My hair and I really, really missed her. (more…)

East Atlanta Strut

21 Sep

I’m still recovering from a very busy weekend and a very recent meltdown of my daughter outside of Saree World. We decided to take a look at the saree selection in this shop in Decatur. The dresses were beautiful, and she had her heart set on this one for $60. I just could not buy it. I mean as a birthday gift, yes, but as an it’s Tuesday I think I’ll drop $60 on a fancy dress she’ll wear maybe once for a dress-up party, NO.

After the meltdown (hers and mine), I sent miss Devon to her room and drank a beer. Then I oprahfied myself in a photo for my bff who was having a crappy day and put it on her facebook wall. Then I finally got around to importing some photos from the East Atlanta Strut last weekend to share with you guys. (more…)

10,000 hours

9 Sep

I’ve read that it takes 10,000 hours of practice to master something. That breaks down to roughly 20 hours a week for 10 years. I just started playing drums over the summer, and I practice for a few hours a week. So, it looks like I’ll be a drum master in my 70s, which is fine by me. I’d rather do that than play bingo anyway.

Joe Morello – Master jazz drummer

Buddy Rich – Master drummer with a mean temper

Karen Carpenter – Great drummer. Who Knew? I didn’t until my friend showed me this clip of her.

Senri Kawaguchi – Japanese drummer, age 13. She started playing at 5, so I’m guessing she crammed those 10,000 hours into 8 years. She’s amazing and adorable.

Ok, well I’m off to practice. I only have 9,900 hours to go.

So, it’s career week at my son’s pre-k, and the parents are invited to visit the class and do a show and tell on their job. The teachers sent a note home asking us to participate and wear the appropriate uniform/work attire to give the kids a real taste of our profession.

My “profession” is a bit murky and has been since my first kid lured me to quit my job as a technical writer and stay at home with her cuteness. On the school form, I filled in “writer” as my occupation because I have a blog and I do freelance writing from time to time. This prompted the teacher to ask me to read stories to the class every two weeks since I’m familiar with how one writes and tells a story, and presumably I have a lot of time to kill. I like reading the stories. Four year olds are a pretty good audience. I read a story last week about a family of pandas kissing, and they all screamed out ewwwwww in unison. (more…)
