sing along to spinnerette. i do

11 Jan

This is my second post on Spinnerette. The first post featured “Ghetto Love,” an incredibly catchy song with an equally snappy video from their EP of the same name. I’m currently addicted to the single “Baptized by Fire.” It’s melodic enough to sing along to in the car and rock enough to still qualify as badass.

Brody Dalle (formerly of the punk band The Distillers) puts most female singers in the punk/indie scene to shame. Her vocals are strong, and while I could stomach the singing/screaming of plenty of girl bands when I was younger (Bikini Kill, Bratmobile, Sleater Kinney), I prefer to hear grown-up singing now. Plus, Brody is a mom and her songwriting reflects the emotional shift that occurs in motherhood.

“I’ll be sailing on out into Bermuda blue. Compass needle breaks, like the heart I gave to you.”

I don’t know about you, but there is something very powerful about seeing or hearing an artist perform and knowing she shares the intensity that is parenthood offstage. On a sidenote, Ms. Dalle is married to Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age and Them Crooked Vultures. They’re like the Brangelina of the underground music scene. Just imagine playdates with Dave Grohl’s kids and having John Paul Jones over for brunch. I can’t help but be fascinated!

Brody Dalle by Silvia McFadden

singer. guitarist. songwriter. mother of camille harley.

If punk rock has a heart, it belongs to brody dalle of The Distillers and Spinnerette. Read an interview with brody at antiquiet.

“I’d like to be an artist like Tom Waits where I’ll just make records and occasionally go out on tour. I’ll do it just for the pure pleasure of making records. And if a select few people like them and want to buy them, then that’s amazing. I’m lucky.”
